I did not take that picture, but I was once a pro photographer and I know how.  It is a long exposure: somewhere from a second or so up to minutes.  You need a solid tripod, and a camera that can do long exposures.

+Amy Clay takes a lot of patience. The storm was about 3 miles away from me at this point. I set up my Canon 5D Mark III on a tripod and set the camera on BULB mode. Using a remote timer, I open the shutter until I see a flash and get my exposure time (trial and error). F stop depends on distance and intensity of the lightning. This was f5.6 I believe. Lastly, lightning is dangerous. I do not take chances. Hope this helps a little 🙂
